What a first week it has been. After hours of training on how not to rape someone and well more of that, we are finally "shopping" classes here at Yale. But let's back up a few days and take a look at how the whole experience has unfolded thus far.
Follow up:
When I finally got moved in to my dorm and had a chance to look around my first impression brought to mind words like "Wow" and "Oh my Gosh" and "Whoa" along with excessive amounts of drooling. After I pulled my jaw back into place I realized that this truly must be the top school in the country. I cannot imagine a more incredible place on the face of the earth. Everything...EVERYTHING is top notch. I couldn't be happier with my roommates, our dorm itself is newly remodeled and very spacy, the Dean and Master are both awesome. You can check out some pictures of my dorm at: This Link!
After the inital shock wore off I realized that I didn't really know what to do at this grandeur palace. That's where one of the most useful people of my college experience thus far comes into play, my FroCo. Short for Freshman Counselor. I mean it when I say this guy is amazing. Essential your best friend as an RA. He lives across the hall from us and has just always been there for us to help with course selection and college life.
As an extension of this, I'm happy to report that my roommate Alex and I beat FroCo and other senior friend in a 2v2 basketball game. It was an epic victory.
In terms of extra curriculars, I have started doing photography for the Yale Daily News, the #1 college newspaper in the country according to some source. That's been very fun thus far. In addition, Improv Comedy tryouts are this weekend so I'm hoping to make a group there.
So after a few days of experiencing college social life and meeting people, the time finally came to pick out some classes to shop. At Yale, registration for classes doesn't occur for 2 weeks. This gives everyone the opportunity to visit classes and pick out some they like. I know for sure that I am taking German Level 3, Intro to Com Sci, and Consumer Culture in the 20th Century...however I am currently in need of a fourth class. I was looking at Digital Photography which I attended today, it looks like an AWESOME class, but unfortunately a lot of other people thought so too and I am unable to be in that class due to registration caps. Back to the bottom of the seniority poll. This actually works out ok as the parents weren't keen on art classes, however they are keen on diverse classes...go figure. Which leads me to "European Intellectual History since Nietzsche". It's essentially a look at how history has influenced philosophy in the 20th century. It's supposed to be pretty easy and interesting so I will probably pursue that unless my FroCo has other good ideas. Attending Intellectual history today shows "Shopping Period" at its finest with over 150 people showing up for this class.
That about concludes the first day of classes. I've been getting some good Ping-Pong work in and am looking forward to intramurals. Weather has been great for the most part, but rain finally rolled in tonight. This made for some cool rainbow pictures however, so that was fun. I shot some new header photos for the blog tonight as well...so those should be randomly cycling for you. Off to figure out what to do for a fourth class now, and time to start some German work!
Bis spater (till later)
