No updates for some time now, but I'm back. Thanksgiving break was a cruelly short-lived tease before finals, but it's finally dawning upon me after finishing my first class of the semester (minus the final...minor detail).
The good news is that this weekend should be awesome! Friday is an on-campus VQ show which should be awesome! In addition, it is opening night for the play I did lighting design for, "Speech & Debate". Finally, it's also initiation for YDN, meaning that I will no longer be known as Contributing Photographer, but rather Staff Photographer.
Speech and Debate goes up this Friday at 8, then runs Saturday and Sunday at 6:30 and 9:00 both days. It takes place in Nick Chapel (theater in Trumbull), which is a smallish space seating 50-60 people. It has 20 dimmers, and 24 lights. Nice little place really. Naturally I took a set of pictures that can be found on facebook. For more about my lighting design read on!
Follow up:
I discovered that it's more difficult to take pictures in tight quarters as opposed to the huge spaces I've worked in before. However it made for some fun lighting design. Lots of the scenes that take place in the classroom are pretty simply white or off-white...nothing too interesting. But I'm rather happy with the other things.
The photo on the photoblog was taken from the three rooms setup. Each character has a "room" on stage. For this I put a white front light and colored side light to help bring out their character and provide seperation. For example, Solomon had a dark amber has his color and Diwata a pinkish tint in the picture. Howie, another character, was a very light blue.
My favorite scene however is the crazy dance and musical scene. For that one I got to play with some "dance lighting", I used 6 side lights, 3 on each side. One dark red, one white per side, plus the colored room side lights (amber and light blue). In addition some red and blue back lights...it was really fun and I really like the effect that came out of it. It was a good experience, I can't wait to see what people think (and the reviewer coming tonight). Next up is Equus which will be significantly harder. That's in the OBT which means I have to pick where to put the lights...twice as many lights. Oh boy, but should be fun!!!
So that's been my week. Updates may be sparse for the next month or so as I will have finals and break. But expect some interesting stories from the VQ's Winter Tour in January!!! Till next time.
